My Teacher is a Monster! is a highly rated picture book by Peter Brown, best for readers aged 4-8.
Illustrated with primary shapes and bright colors, My Teacher is a Monster! is a wonderful example for introducing plot structure to students.
The plot is one of universal
application for every person that was ever a student in a classroom.
Children can identify with Bobby's situation of getting stuck with a cranky new teacher, and the
familiar characters and setting both lend credibility to the
believable plot. The conflict between Bobby and his teacher is
immediately apparent, and the rising action takes place as they both
meet up in the park and overcome a challenge together, while getting
to know each other. The climax is Bobby’s epiphany that his teacher
may not be the monster he perceives her to be, but is instead a real
person who can connect with others. The denouement is apparent when
Bobby returns to his familiar classroom, and his surroundings and
schedule are still the same, but he now can see his teacher in a new
light.
