The character of Olivia is
a wonderful example of an adventurous and energetic child that many
children can either relate to, or find fascinating. It is her
simplistic, child-like, and exuberant nature that entrances the
reader and even allows adults to reminisce about the good old days.
The use of the color red in the illustrations highlights all of the
objects and clothing that Olivia finds throughout the day, and takes
pleasure in playing with. The comparative realism of the ballerina
painting Olivia is drawn to, depicts Olivia’s particular interest in the subject
matter, and paints Olivia as a child with real ambitions. Her
conversations and interactions with her mother and brother are both
believable and heartwarming. Her strong sense of self makes her a
unique character in a classic story.
